Remember when the internet was this amazing resource that would answer almost all of your questions with no monetization craze and "leave your email" to receive this ebook that will (rather might) be what you are looking for? We do too! And boy we miss those simpler days. There is still some hope!

We were completing a WordPress/WooCommerce-based project for a client who requested setting up tax calculations for his customers. And everyone involved in development of systems based on WordPress with WooCommerce knows, WooCommerce has several options to set up and collect taxes as required in whatever legal jurisdiction the business is in:

  • Automated tax calculation which requires an additional plugin (WooCommerce Services) and Jetpack to enable WooCommerce Services
  • Manual set up, using the standard rate portion of the Tax tab under WooCommerce > Settings

The Problem

Try searching for "California tax rates CSV for WooCommerce" to set up standard rates. You either get an outdated CSV from 2014 or a couple of links to purchase the 2020 version. Amazingly, all of this information is available for free at the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration as a table and as downloadable Excel files on the California City & County Sales & Use Tax Rates page.

The Solution

All you need to do is export the blank format of the CSV from the WooCommerce backend and populate it with the data downloaded from the California City & County Sales & Use Tax Rates page. It's public data — no email opt-in required, no paywall, just the information you need to configure your store correctly.

If you need help setting up tax calculations for your WooCommerce store — whether for California or any other state — our team can handle the configuration for you so you can focus on running your business.
